Tell me how you would check the headlights and taillights are working

I would drive to somewhere quiet, switch on the lights and get out and check. As an alternative I could use a window or another car

Show me how you would check the brake lights are working. You can use me if you want to.

Ask your passenger/examiner/instructor to go round to the back of the car and press the brake pedal. Make sure the ignition is switched on!

Tell me how you would check the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Drive a short distance and test for a good response.

Ideally drive onto a hill, apply the handbrake and release the footbrake and see if the car rolls back. N.b The car will “settle” by moving forwards or backwards slightly

Pull back on the wiper stalk and hold for a few seconds.

How to check the oil - under the bonnet

Identify the oil filler cap and tell me how you would check the car has enough oil inside the engine.

Pull out the dipstick

and clean it with a cloth. Place it back in and then pull it out again to check that the level is between the minimum and maximum markings. In most cars the engine needs to be off, cold and on a level ground.

Identify the coolant tank and check levels

 Peer around the left side of the tank and observe the minimum and maximum markings.

Checking the Brake Fluid

Identify the brake fluid reservoir and tell me how you would check there is enough fluid inside. Peer around the left side of the tank and observe the minimum and maximum markings

Checking the washer fluid

Identify the washer fluid reservoir and tell me how you would ensure there is fluid inside

Checking the tyres are in good working order?

Observe the side of the tyre for any cuts or bulges. Measure across at least ¾ of the tyre tread and check to see its at least 1.6mm in depth. N.b. You can also use a 20p coin or check the grooves between the tread

Where would you find the recommended tyre pressures for this car?

On the frame of the drivers door. Other cars may store their recommended tyre pressures in the owners manual.

Tell me who you would ensure the head restraint is correctly adjusted for your use?

Ensure the pad covers the back of your head and not just your neck

Identify the rear fog light and tell me when you would use it?

Point to the switch. I would use it when visibility is seriously reduced.

Identify the rear window demister and tell me when you would use it Point to the switch?

Point to the switch. When visibility out of the back window is poor.

Adjust the fan and temperature settings to their maximum settings and ensure the fan director switch is on the windscreen icon

Tell me how you would know if there was a fault with the Anti-lock braking system?
